:: Life Expectancy of Applied Coating ::

The life of any coating system depends on the following :-

1.	Correct surface preparation
2.	Correct choice of paints
3.	Correct painting procedures
4.	Careful maintenance

Whereas we have discussed about the surface preparation and the choice of paints, we need to discuss the importance of the painting procedure and maintenance of coatings.

:: CORRECT APPLICTION OF PAINT ::
The following precautions should be taken during application

1.	Application of paint should be done at the ambient temperature. The surface4 should also be at the ambient temperature.
2.	Do not apply paint when temperature drops below 10 degrees C.
3.	Do not apply paint when humidity is above 90% or during fog, rain or mist
4.	Choose the correct painting process for which the paint is designed like brushing, spraying or toweling. Adjust the viscosity if required with recommde thinner only.
5.	Primer surface should be over-coated after the specifies overcoatability time
6.	Blast cleaned surface should be coated with primer within 3-4 hours under normal conditions.
7.	All the two-pack paints should be mixed in proper proportion and applied after the recommended induction time which is generally 15-30 minutes. The mixed paint should be used up within the pot life specified

The durability or life of paint also depends on the ingredients of the paints. Most important ingredient in the finish coat is the base resin used. The choice of resin depends on the environment in which it has to perform and the economics.

:: MAINTENANCE ::

To extend or renew the life of the coatings it is important to carry out maintenance procedures, it is essential to keep rectifying localized accident damages due to mechanical action. In such an event, spot repair is carried out with same system.

In order to locate damage, periodical inspection procedures should be laid down. If such damages to unnoticed these will form weaker spots and the rusting will start spreading under the film and will come up to the surface only after considerable damage has taken place which will be beyond repair.
